Sayyod Mirzomurodov
About
Clarinetist Sayyod Mirzomurodov is recognized as a leading voice for contemporary Uzbek music on the international stage. Hailed by Gazeta.uz for creating "the first Uzbek album dedicated to clarinet and piano," he has brought a previously unrecorded body of Central Asian repertoire to listeners, performers, and students worldwide.
His debut album, Contemporary Uzbek Music for Clarinet and Piano (Clarinet & Saxophone Classics, 2026), recorded with pianist Mariya Akhadjanova, presents nine works by six Uzbek composers, all in world-premiere recordings, several written for and dedicated to him. Critics in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Hong Kong have praised the release: CD HotList called it an "utterly delightful disc," and the Yorkshire Times described it as "a landmark for the clarinet's Central Asian repertoire." The album has been broadcast on WPRB's Classical Discoveries, and his work has been featured by BBC News O'zbek, Gazeta.uz, Kultura.uz, and Novastan.
Mirzomurodov has appeared at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center in Chicago, and the Princess Galyani Vadhana International Music Festival in Bangkok, and as a soloist with the Turkiston Chamber Orchestra and the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra. He is a 2026 prizewinner of The American Prize in Instrumental Performance. A committed advocate for new music, he works closely with composers including Farrukh Akramov, Sherzod Sobirov, Nurali Erkaev, and Mustafo Bafoyev, and has given the premieres of works written for him.
Within the International Clarinet Association, he serves as Country Chair for Uzbekistan, the only such position in Central Asia, and as a member of the New Music Committee and the Membership and Development Committee. He served on the jury of the ICA 2026 Composition Competition and is Coordinator of the ICA 2027 Composition Competition. His article on composer Anvar Ergashev is forthcoming in The Clarinet.
A dedicated educator, Mirzomurodov has taught clarinet at the University of Iowa, Augustana College, and the Lyceum of the National Guard of Uzbekistan. He continues to perform, record, and premiere new works, bringing the music of Central Asia to audiences around the world.
